Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn located in Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. When she was young, her carnival barker father died which left Ruth's mother with no choice but to be a cleaning woman and waitress to support her family. Ruth was a student and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. But she quit school in the span of two years to pursue an acting career. The route she took did not come without challenges. In New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills in crime magazines. her dream of performing in the theater she longed to do was abyssal. After working as a hat-check girl in a nightclub, she quit and returned to Boston. There, she made ends meet with her ushering duties in the morning, while in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She was a drama student in The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
